Surge in Electric Vehicle Adoption Marks a New Era of Transportation in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, July 10, 2024 — The latest data from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport reveals a significant increase in the registration of electric vehicles (EVs) in Cambodia, signaling a shift towards more sustainable transportation options. In the first half of 2024 alone, 2,968 electric vehicles were registered, encompassing 914 motorcycles, 440 tricycles, and 1,614 cars.

Leading the electric surge, BYD vehicles accounted for the highest number with 658 registrations, followed by TOYOTA at 261, and TESLA with 186. The growing interest in electric vehicles is reflective of a broader trend away from traditional fuel-cell vehicles, highlighting a societal shift towards environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternatives.

The appeal of electric vehicles in Cambodia is largely due to their lower daily operational costs, comfort, and significantly reduced pollution levels. Some manufacturers also tout the benefit of zero emissions, further enhancing their attractiveness to environmentally conscious consumers.

In support of this emerging trend, the Royal Government of Cambodia, spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport along with other relevant ministries, is actively working to enhance the infrastructure necessary to support electric vehicles. This includes expanding the number of charging stations across the country to accommodate the increasing number of EVs on the road.

This proactive approach by the government and the enthusiastic response from the public demonstrate Cambodia's commitment to embracing modern technologies and sustainable practices in its transportation sector. The move not only aligns with global environmental goals but also sets a precedent for future developments in the region's automotive industry.
